Magnolia on Detroit Apartments consists of two four-story buildings on Detroit Avenue built in the 1920’s, and four three-story buildings built in 1970 on West 80th Street and West 83rd Street, containing 126 dwelling units. The building complex was comprehensively renovated in 1986 and again 2006. Magnolia on Detroit Apartments provides housing for families, seniors and disabled persons. The buildings are situated in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood west of downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
There are (36) one-bedroom (mid-rise) units consisting of 576 square feet of space; six 2-bedroom (mid-rise) units consisting of 816 square feet of space; 60 one-bedroom low-rise units consisting of 483 square feet of space; and twenty-four two-bedroom low-rise units each consisting of 594 square feet of space. The units on West 80th and West 83rd Streets are “flats” or “garden” style apartments in a two and one-half-story walk up building. The 126 units in the two Detroit Avenue buildings are serviced by an elevator. The heating for the units is provided by a gas-fired central boiler system in each building and fin tube baseboard radiators in each unit. Cooling for the units is provided by individual through-wall and window air conditioning units. Each apartment has an individual electric 60-amp panel with 4 fuses. There is an intercom system to notify residents of guests at the entrance of the building.
The units have a combination of carpet, ceramic tile, vinyl composite tile and residential grade vinyl tile. The vinyl and ceramic tile is typically found in the kitchens and bathrooms and carpeting in all other living spaces and hallways with wood base throughout the apartments. Apartment entry doors consist of original stained wood doors with wood frames and self-closing devices. In the kitchen, the ranges are typically 4-burner, 20” electric freestanding stoves and the frost-free refrigerators are typically 14-16 cubic feet.
